Two ministries sign agreement to build electric vehicle repair skills

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 5 November on electric vehicle maintenance skills.

Announcing the agreement on X, the climate ministry said it is intended to boost technical capacity for servicing and repairing electric vehicles and their charging stations. The MoU was signed at a ceremony held that day.

Training for technicians

Under the agreement, technical staff from relevant sectors throughout the country will have the opportunity to receive specialised training in the upkeep and repair of electric vehicles and charging stations, the ministry said. It described the MoU as a further significant move in the Maldives' shift towards cleaner, more sustainable transport.

Link to the ISLET Project

According to the ministry, the initiative seeks to build local know-how so that the electric buses and other electric vehicles supplied through the Integrated, Sustainable and Low Emissions Transport in the Maldives (ISLET) Project can be operated and maintained over the long term. The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

A further aim is to strengthen the country's ability to carry out comparable electric mobility and sustainable transport projects in future. The ministry's statement did not give figures on how many people will be trained, or any dates or costs.
