Flying roof tin injures one as waterspout strikes Sh. Lhaimagu
A waterspout tore into Sh. Lhaimagu on 7 November, badly damaging roofs on some warehouses and about four houses and leaving one person with a head wound, NDMA said. Heavy rain is expected until 11 November.
One person was injured and the roofs of some warehouses and of about four houses were badly damaged when a waterspout swept across Sh. Lhaimagu on Saturday 7 November, according to the Maldives' National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
In a post on X, NDMA said a sheet of roofing tin, sent flying, struck the person on the head, causing a wound for which they are now being treated. A damage assessment is being carried out by the island council.
Roofs, trees and walls
By the council's account, the waterspout arrived at around 07:30, travelling from north to south, tearing off roofs, uprooting trees and bringing down some walls. Some of the damaged homes took in water. Treatment was provided, according to the council, at the Lhaimagu health centre.
Flooding on GA. Kolamaafushi
A day earlier, on 6 November, heavy rain flooded homes and other buildings on GA. Kolamaafushi, NDMA reported on X. The flooding cut electricity on the island and left some property damaged. Working alongside the island council, residents set about clearing the water, and the Southern Area Command of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) supplied pumps and sacks for sandbags.
NDMA later said channels were being dug across the island to let the water drain away. According to the council, an MNDF team reached Kolamaafushi at 21:40 and got to work.
