Ahmed Saleem returns to lead Majlis scrutiny of the 2027 state budget
Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, who led last year's review, will again chair the Majlis Budget Committee as it examines the 2027 budget, and Ali Fazad, MP for Central Fuvahmulah, will serve as vice chair.
The Budget Committee of the People's Majlis will be steered through its examination of the 2027 state budget by a familiar figure: Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, who chaired its review of the 2026 budget. Ali Fazad, the MP for Central Fuvahmulah, is vice chair. Majlis committee records date both appointments to 4 November 2026, and both MPs belong to the PNC.
Membership and meetings
Twenty-two MPs sit on the committee this term, drawn from the PNC, MDP, JP and MDA, according to the Majlis website. Most were assigned on 29 October 2026; Ahmed Aifan (North Henveyru) and Mohamed Dawoodh (North Kulhudhuffushi) were added on 4 November 2026.
The committee met for the first time in 2026 on 4 November and fixed a second meeting for 10:30 on 5 November.
The 2027 budget on the Majlis record
An item titled "Forecasted Budget for the year 2027" was opened in the committee on 29 October 2026 and is shown as ongoing. The Majlis separately records "Budget 2027" as ongoing parliament work, which covers the 2027 Budget's presentation under the Constitution's Article 96(h).
Saleem is recorded as chair for the 2026 budget review between 6 November and 19 November 2025, when it concluded. A year earlier, in October and November 2024, the roles were reversed: Fazad chaired the committee's work on the 2025 budget, with Saleem as vice chair.
The Auditor General's Office, the Ministry of Finance and the Maldives Monetary Authority are among the bodies whose staff go through the proposed budget with the committee before it delivers its report to the Majlis.
