Government staff get four-day Republic Day break as Thursday becomes a holiday
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has turned Thursday 12 November 2026, which falls after Republic Day, into a government holiday, so government employees will have four days off in succession.
Government employees will have four consecutive days off over Republic Day: Thursday 12 November 2026 has been made an official holiday by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The President's Office announced the decision on 5 November.
Republic Day, on Wednesday 11 November, is already a public holiday, and Friday and Saturday form the regular weekend. Thursday would otherwise have been a lone working day between them. With it removed, government staff will be off between Wednesday 11 November and Saturday 14 November, and will return to work on Sunday 15 November.
The President's Office said the aim was to give government employees an uninterrupted break. The announcement applies to government employees only; it says nothing about the private sector.
