Smaller cylinder refills from 7 November as Maldive Gas cites prices and imports

Cooking gas customers will receive less with every refill from Saturday 7 November 2026, after the State Trading Organisation (STO) subsidiary Maldive Gas announced a temporary reduction in the quantity it puts in each cylinder.

The company attributed the decision to higher international gas prices and to difficulties in bringing gas into the country. Its stated aim is to prevent any break in supply.

Smaller fills, same rate

Under the new arrangement:

  • a 10kg cylinder will contain 7kg
  • a 22kg cylinder will contain 14kg
  • a 45kg cylinder will contain 31kg

Pricing per kg is unchanged, and customers will be billed at the current rate only for the weight they receive. In effect, every refill now holds less gas.

Maldive Gas has given no indication of how long the reduction will last. Comparable limits were imposed in March 2026.

For the longer term, the company looks to storage. Work is in progress to enlarge the country's capacity so that it can hold three months of supply at a time, an arrangement Maldive Gas describes as a lasting answer to repeated shortages.
